[b]Funding your project [/b]
When you decide that you want to get a park built in your area, one of the most important things to think about is how you will fund the park. There have been many cases in the past of people who have found a site, got the permission, started to build it, and then run out of money. This will always be a massive disappointment after all that initial hard work.

Things to think about
Do you know how much it will cost to build the park?
Yes - £120,000 +
Have you considered the fact that it will need to be maintained?
We Need about £5000 a year.
How will the ongoing upkeep of the park be paid for?

Ideas for fundraising [Back to Top]
There are always lots of school fairs and local fetes being held, especially in the summer months. This is an ideal place to raise money, but also to raise awareness within your local community about what you are doing. Distribute flyers telling people what you are trying to achieve, get them to sign a petition. Display any news articles about what you have done so far, use the opportunity to sign up new members for the park once it has opened. If you can persuade a local skate shop to donate a couple of prizes, you could do a raffle, some form of game, quiz or competition. You could erect a graffiti wall and charge a small amount of money for people to create some artwork on it.
If there is the space, put on a small demonstration of what you and your mates can do. Bear in mind keeping your spectators safe it is really, really important - an accident before you even open is not the sort of publicity you need! Likewise, don't let members of the public participate, borrow your bikes or boards. If you do, you may well encounter problems with insurance if there is an accident.
You could organise a film festival showing the latest skate documentaries/films etc, local bands could also be invite to play afterwards, or you could put together a small music festival to raise money.

Lottery Funding [Back to Top]
The National Lottery was set up by the Government in 1995 to raise extra money for good causes. Sport was named as one of the good causes to benefit from Lottery money and Sport England (then known as the English Sports Council) was named as a distributor. Sport improves the quality of life for all and provides lasting benefits in areas such as education, health, the regeneration of communities and promoting social inclusion. Commercial Sponsorship [Back to Top]
Another way to attract funding is to get involved with commercial sponsorship. Write to people and tell them what you are doing. Ask them if they would like to be involved, if you have a team of really top riders,you may be able to find sponsorship from a company, who will provide you with your kit. You can also invite commercial people to advertise at your park, and charge them a small amount of money.

How are you going to run the park? [Back to Top]
To make a park work from a disclaimer point of view you may need to run it as a 'club' - members pay a one off joining fee and sign a disclaimer. This would protect the park owner from the routine injuries. Under 16's membership should also be countersigned by a parent or guardian. Members would then pay a small amount on a pay per use basis.

Insurance [Back to Top]
All skateparks, as with any facility used by the public, need public liability insurance. Although plenty of safety signs and warnings should be present at your park, this isn't a substitute for an insurance policy.
If you are an organised club or have skating equipment within a youth club etc and are responsible for the running of club event, competitions and activities, then you may also need third party public liability insurance. This is definitely an area where you need expert advice.
Councils are usually covered by Zurich Municipal and a skatepark can be an added on to an existing policy that covers all their other leisure facilities. So in the first instance it is recommended you contact Zurich.

Health and Safety [Back to Top]
This is an area which you will need to consider very carefully, and very seriously. There is potential for accidents to happen and you need to know what to do if something does come up. Its is a sad thing to have to say, but there are likely to be people out there who are just waiting for something to go wrong at your park i.e. the people who were opposed to it being built in the first place.
There are new BSI guidelines that have been written for skateparks, and RoSPA have recently produced a 32 page document called "Guidelines for Wheeled Sports Equipment on Children's playgrounds" which can be ordered from them.

Once you have your skatepark up and running you may want to think about additional options for the park. These can include things such as opening up a café to feed and water your customers, perhaps opening up a retail outlet in conjunction with an existing shop.

You could also set up a Web site as a way of advertising yourself, and to keep your customers informed with skate news and issues.
